Fly Fishing Gear

Fly fishing can be a very fun hobby, but without the right fly fishing gear your hobby can quickly turn into a hassle. You need to make sure that when you are starting out that you have at least the basic gear on hand. The right gear will allow you to have the best experience and will ensure that you are safe out there on the water.

One thing to note about fly fishing gear is that your needs may vary depending on where you live or where you fish. You may need to make adjustments to this list, so be aware of that. Consider starting with this basic gear list and double checking with an expert in your area on the specifics on each thing you need.

Fly Rod: For most a six weight to seven weight, nine foot fly rod will be fine. A good quality one will make casting smoother and easier. To protect your precious fly fishing gear, consider a sturdy rod tube made out of aluminium or pcv.

Fly Reel: Again, an essential piece of fly fishing gear, a reel should hold plenty of line and backing. A single action reel should do fine for most situations.

Fly Line: There is no room for skimping when it comes to buying fly fishing line. Go with the best you can afford. The fly line is often neglected and is an important piece of fly fishing gear. It needs to be good quality so it will cast and perform better. You want to avoid something that will tangle too easily or break easily. Go with a floating line to match your rod.

Fly Fishing Leader: You can get a variety of leaders. Don't go lower than about 7 foot. To be honest, you will probably catch the most fish with 9 foot leaders, especially if the fish are timid. Choose a few 4X, 5X and 6X to start.

Tippet: Go with fluorocarbon. While it is more expensive, it is invisible. A roll of 5X and 6X are best to start with.

Flies: You are fly fishing, so you must have flies that cover a wide range of fishing conditions and imitate the local food source. There are many different options.

Consider starting with a nice selection. Go with some nymph patterns, a few wets, and some dry fly imitations. This is one part of your gear that you should really discuss with locals who are fly fishing or your local tackle shop. They can help you figure out what is best and what works in your area.

Besides these basic pieces of fly fishing gear, you will need some other equipment. Most of the fly fishing gear on this list is going to be based on your personal preferences. You should consider what you want and if you need this gear or not.

This optional fly fishing gear list is really just to help you ensure you have gear that helps make your fly fishing experience the best possible.

This list is not extensive and you may find other things that you want to add to fly fishing gear. Everyone is different, so some things on this list may not even be in your gear. The point of the list was to help give you an idea of the common fly fishing gear that is used when angling and to help you get started putting together your tackle so you can get out there on the water and start reeling in some fish.
