Fly Fishing Equipment - The Basics
Fly fishing is a method where you try to catch fish in the most natural way, which is the prey and predator
concept. In this kind of fishing the fisherman tries to lure the fish with baits that are similar to the insects
these fishes feed on. The way of casting and controlling the fly line helps imitate the way these baits move,
therefore trying to make the fishes conceive that it’s the real insect.
With that solely in mind, choosing the best fly fishing equipment would be easier. But first what are those basic
equipments? Namely they are: fly rods, fly fishing reel, fly fishing line, leader & tippet, a box of fly,
waders & wading boots, and a fly fishing vest. Although the list seems many already especially for beginners,
it can be categorized into two sets. Fly fishing equipment consist of the 1) fishing gears itself and 2) your
personal fishing apparel.
But before buying anything, there are also other important things to consider. Choose what type of fishes to fish
because the fly or bait differs for each fish. Also know what kind of waters you are going to do this activity, for
some waters may be calm and others may have a stronger current. These conditions may help you decide on what gears
and features to look for in a fly fishing equipment. Find and choose what will suit your need.
Fly rods are basically used for casting the fly line. It differs from the normal rods, it usually have more line
guides and has a common length between 7 to 9 feet that is one and a half or two times longer than the common
fishing rod. It has three basic purposes: casting, line control, and fighting. Casting is all about setting the fly
line accurately on the water where the fishes are and without shooing them away. Line control is properly placing
the fly on place and presenting it well as the bait. Fighting is when the rod is used to struggle, hook, and
eventually land the catch fish.
The fly fishing reel is used to hold the fly line. The most important features to look for in a fly reel is the
material it is made of, (for saltwater fly fishing, how fast it can retrieve the line), and the kind of drag system
it has. The holes in the reel has two purposes, to make it lighter (which is better because you will use it for
hours) and for airing and drying of the fly line. They are usually made of aluminium, titanium, and plastic.
The fly line is the essential part of any fly fishing equipment. It is usually made of a tapered plastic coating
with a nylon or braided Dacron core. In buying the fly line you should consider its weight compatibility with your
fly reel and rod. For fly fishing there are three kinds of fly line based on their tapering, namely: weight forward
(WF), double taper (DT), and shooting taper (ST). Replacing a fly line yearly is recommended.
The leader is the nylon that connects your fly line to the fly. A well designed leader is needed for a good or
accurate casting. On the other hand the tippet is the tapered end of a leader, where the fly is tied. And the fly
is the bait used. The fly is the artificial insect used to lure the fish and a variety of it is available in the
market.
The other gears such as waders, wading boots, and fly fishing vest are categorized as the fishing apparels. They
are important in providing the fisherman comfort during the whole fishing activity. The fly fishing equipment such
waders and wading boots are recommended for fishing areas that has limited shore access, where you will be mostly
on water. The fishing vest on the other hand is very helpful in putting your gears and other items in order. It
also provides easy access to those items while fly fishing.
